Correspondence, 1887-1911.

Correspondence of Judith (Walker) Andrews concerning the American Ramabai Association and its charitable endeavors in India, chiefly the schools Sharada Sadan in Poona and later the Mukti Sadan in Kedgaon, both established and run by the Pandita Ramabai Sarasvati (popularly known as "Ramabai"). The collection chiefly consists of letters from Ramabai to Mrs. Andrews describing her work in India to educate and care for "child widows" of the Hindu upper castes (at Sharada Sadan), and also her later work on behalf of famine victims and to promote Christianity among her pupils (at Mukti Sadan), as well as her difficulties negotiating within the rigid boundaries of Hindu tradition. There are also letters from missionary Minnie F. Abrams and Ramabai's daughter Manorama describing their various activities in India and travels to other places, and letters written by pupils at the schools, as well as some miscellaneous correspondence concerning Ramabai and her charities. The collection includes accounts of the Sharada Sadan for the years 1889-1898 (with gaps).
